Another Week of Swell in Socal | Weekly Socal Forecast | 7.13.21 – 7.19.21

It may sound like a broken record, but yet another good week of surf is lining up for SoCal thanks to continued storm activity in the South Pacific.

Overview

Multiple strong storms pushed out across the southeast Pacific compared to the storms that pushed across the Southwest Pacific last week. We’ll see plenty of this southerly energy early in the week and into the weekend as the run slightly tapers off then. The second run of south will be steeper than most souths we’ve seen this year, so south-facing breaks will see the majority of its energy compared to west facing breaks which will be significantly smaller. Not a whole lot of NW swell making it into the region this week, but there may be just enough some days for an occasional peak at the beach breaks.

Local water temperatures have really warmed up this past week, and will continue to hover around that 70 degree mark through the forecast. Seasonal summer weather will persist as that strong ridge of high pressure slowly weakens, mostly affecting those inland areas as coastal areas don’t see too much of a dip in temps. Conditions don’t look too bad most mornings, as we’ll see calm to very light onshore breezes at times. The afternoons won’t be too blown out throughout the week, so some evenings will stay light enough for a surf.

Best Bets

Target the run of south swell during the work week.

Keep a heads up for the morning low tide which will drain things out early.

Day to Day Breakdown

Tuesday the 13th: 3-5 feet

Overlapping swells consisting of older southern hemi, and a newer one building to a peak. Size will be best for summer south-facing breaks, as other west-facing breaks will be significantly smaller. A very slight increase in NW windswell mixing in. Morning winds will be calm, and the afternoon will have a slight southerly breeze.

Wednesday the 14th: 3-5+ feet

Newer southern hemi tops out, possibly showing slightly bigger sets than Tuesday for the summer south-facing breaks during the mid-to-late morning tide push. Less NW energy than Tuesday, so things will be pretty walled and lined up. Morning winds will be calm, but some areas may be dealing with a minor south wind on it. Afternoon winds will again have a light southerly breeze.

Thursday the 15th: 3-5 feet

South swell will hang in there to slightly ease late, until we see the next even steeper south fill in through the day. This swell won’t be adding any additional size, and will be pretty selective for areas that can’t pull in a straight south swell. Morning winds look slightly more textured than earlier in the week, but still pretty favorable and clean enough for a session.

Friday the 16th: 3-4+ occasional 5 feet

Another day of fun but selective surf as the steeper south becomes the primary swell in the water. Still not much NW energy mixing in. Morning winds look similar to Thursday with very light south wind possible, but still favorable and clean enough for a surf.

Saturday the 17th: 2-4 feet

Steep south swell trends down, but still showing fun waves for the summer south facing breaks. Again, the breaks that don’t get the straight south will be significantly smaller. There may be a very slight bump in NW swell energy, but that is looking minimal. Winds will be light in the morning, followed by an afternoon seabreeze staying under 10 knots.

Sunday the 18th: 2-3 feet

The downward trend continues. Just small south swell left in the water along with minimal NW swell energy. Morning winds look favorable right now, so it may still be worth a surf on a bigger board.

Monday the 19th: 2-3 feet

South swell bottoms out. Smallest day of surf for this week’s forecast. Winds look fairly similar to other days, but too early for specifics.
