Fun SSW First Week of June in Socal

Socal Weekly Forecast (6/1 – 6/7)

Overview

We will see surf all week long from one storm in the South Pacific that stalled out for a few days and kept pumping out swell for SoCal. Nothing major is expected from this system, just a fun-sized, prolonged run of south swell (190-195°) on the way. There may be enough NW swell mix in the water a few days in the forecast to help break up the dominant southern hemi. Believe it or not, we may even see a small pulse of SSE tropical swell from newly formed tropical storm Blanca in the EPAC for some select spots in SoCal late in the week and into the weekend.

Conditions aren’t looking too bad this week, as a strong ridge of high pressure builds in over NorCal and a low pressure system develops over Baja. That will result in mostly light winds across the region for the majority of the workweek, though we are still due for some June Gloom conditions at the coast with marine layer clouds and a slight onshore breeze in the mornings.

Best Bets

Target the peak of the south swell, and make sure to keep an eye on the morning winds before paddling out.

Daily Breakdown

Tuesday the 1st: 2-3+ occasional 4 feet (largest late)

The new prolonged run of south swell begins to show, slowly building throughout the day, showing better size late. There will be barely any NW windswell left in the mix, so the beach breaks will be pretty walled. Morning winds will be light, but the tide will be pretty drained.

Wednesday the 2nd: 3-5 feet (largest late)

The prolonged run of south swell continues to build all day, showing better size late. Still not a whole lot of NW swell in the water, so the south facing breaks will be best. There may be a slight westerly wind on it early, but most spots are looking manageable.

Thursday the 3rd: 3-5+ occasional 6 feet

South swell holds steady all day, showing pretty fun surf for the southerly exposures. Also, there will be a slight bump in NW swell in the water. Morning winds look to mostly cooperate, so it’ll be a good morning to get in the water if you don’t mind a bit of the June Gloom.

Friday the 4th: 3-5+ occasional 6 feet

Similar size to Thursday, as the south swell holds all day. The continued swell is due to the storm system in the South Pacific that stuck around longer than the average southern hemi. The slight bump in NW swell continues, helping the cause for the beach breaks. Small pulse of tropical swell may show later in the day, but will be pretty minor and hardly noticeable due to the other swells in the water. Conditions look mostly clean, with a slight onshore breeze in the morning for some spots.

Saturday the 5th: 3-5 feet (largest early)

The prolonged run of south swell will finally begin its slow easing trend, but still showing fun size. There will still be some NW swell in the mix along with the small tropical swell, so it’ll be a fun combo of swells for the weekend. Winds may trend slightly south, but definitely manageable and clean enough to get some peaks.

Sunday the 6th: 2-3+ occasional 4 feet

The combo of swells persist, as the dominant south swell hangs in there, and more NW swell mix shows. The tropical swell will fade away barely showing any size. Conditions may deteriorate some, as a trough is expected to drop into the region bringing along a deeper marine layer and stronger south wind.

Monday the 7th: 2-3 feet

Just leftovers of the south swell will remain, and still some NW swell mix hanging in there. Conditions looking somewhat manageable at the moment, but there is low confidence on that.
