Mix of Windswells to End 2021 | Socal Weekly Forecast

Overview

12.31.21 – 1.6.22: Unfortunately we are going to be starting off the new year very slow, once again… Persistent high pressure over the majority of the mid NPAC continues to dominate and block any appreciable swell for our region.  So once again, only small WNW swell is in store this week, with nothing major to report in the short term.

We’re going to end 2021 a mix of easing windswells with another NW windswell building in. New Years Day will see leftover NW windswell with mostly clean conditions. The end of the weekend and into the workweek things will be pretty small, in the 1-2 foot range. The last two days of the forecast have potential to be a bit bigger with more swell. Right now it’s just looking like a smaller sized but fun WNW swell.

After a pretty wet couple weeks, things are going to dry out and conditions will be mostly favorable each morning. The mornings will still be pretty cold, but trending warmer than last week. High temperatures will be in the low 60s with mornings seeing temps dip down below 50 a few days in the week.

Best Bets

– New Years day with small NW windswell and light morning offshore wind.

– Fun little combo of swells the last two days of the forecast.

– Longer range is finally looking better now for potential WNW groundswells.

Day to Day Breakdown

Friday the 31st: 2-3+ feet

A bit jumbled to start the week after Thursday’s storm. Leftover windswell in the water but not ideal conditions. Later in the day another NW windswell is on the rise, but onshore flow will pick up by then.

Saturday the 1st: 2-3+ feet

Happy New Year! One of the better days in the forecast as NW windswell eases and light offshore flow develops. The high tide in the morning may slow things down for some, so the late morning tide drop may be the call. Also keep an eye on the winds in the afternoon as some areas may see offshore flow through the day.

Sunday the 2nd: 1-3 feet

Size gets pretty small as NW drops off quickly. Just a minor mix of swells in the water. The morning wind will be lightly offshore, but deep 7 foot morning high tide at 8am and lack of swell will limit any opportunity for fun waves. Wind will stay light through the afternoon.

Monday the 3rd: 1-3 feet

Another small day of surf. Only a minor mix of swells and another deep high tide. Morning winds will be fairly light followed by a west wind in the afternoon.

Tuesday the 4th: 1-3 feet

Small waves all day with minimal swell. A new WNW swell could show later in the day, possibly bumping up size for northernmost areas in the afternoon. Morning winds will be light again, with just a weak onshore breeze through the day.

Wednesday the 5th: 2-4 feet

A fun day of surf is possible as the new WNW swell tops out, along with a minor new south swell. The high tide mid morning will slow things down for some breaks, so it will be a good idea to target a break that can handle the higher tide while the conditions are clean.

Thursday the 6th: 2-3 feet

Smaller than Wednesday, but the little combo of swells should still show fun waves for most breaks. If the conditions remain favorable, the early morning tide push is the call. Targeting a higher tide break is a good option as well.

Long Range Forecast

After a very wet December with mostly poor surf, the start of 2022 looks to finally improve for WNW winter swell. The stubborn high pressure system over the North Pacific looks to break down a bit in the coming weeks, and allow storms to push across towards the West Coast during most of the month in January. Although there are no major swells to talk about at the moment, things are looking better than December for WNW groundswell. Things look to start off drier than the month of December too.
