More Waves This Week | Socal Weekly Forecast

Overview

1/14/22-1/20/22: Another really fun week of waves is on the way! After one of the biggest and best WNW swells of the year, more pulses of WNW swell are on the way to SoCal. The days to target this week will be Friday and into the weekend, but fun and slightly smaller surf will continue all the way through the workweek.

To start off the forecast, Friday the 14th will see really fun surf as some mid period WNW swell rebounds. This swell will slowly ease over the weekend, but another longer period WNW swell will build in on top of that pulse, maintaining size for most of the region. Into the workweek we will see that longer period swell on the downward trend, but more pulses of WNW swell will move in, keeping things fun all week. Overall, plenty of opportunities to get some waves!

The main weather feature this week as well as the last few days, continues to be a cut off low pressure system to our south that hasn’t moved a whole lot. This has actually been great news in terms of local conditions, as it has maintained pretty light wind across the region and some mid to higher level clouds from time to time. This low pressure system has a few chances to deliver us light showers as it is expected to near the region, but it’s looking mostly dry. So to sum things up, it should be another week of favorable winds for the mornings as well as most afternoons.

Best Bets

– Friday the 14th and into the weekend as overlapping WNW swells maintain good sized surf.

– The workweek will be smaller, but fun sized WNW continues to show fun surf.

– Another week of favorable morning conditions and some afternoon windows.

Day to Day Breakdown

Friday the 14th: 3-5+ feet

One of the better days in the forecast. Our solid WNW swell that peaked Wednesday the 12th will linger, as a new more mid period (12-13s) WNW swell pulses up through the day. This new swell will maintain good size for most of the region. The morning will see favorable conditions followed by just a light onshore breeze in the afternoon. Some areas will stay pretty clean all day. There will also be a slight chance of showers through the day and into Saturday morning.

Saturday the 15th: 3-5+ feet (select winter breaks will see bigger sets)

Another day of good surf. Mid period WNW swell will stick around showing best size for the morning, as a new longer period WNW builds on top of it. Size should hold steady all day as these swells overlap, so there will be lots of waves to track down. Our low pressure system to the south-southwest will continue to meander off the coast over the weekend, as a surface high develops to our northeast. This will bring Santa Ana offshore winds to some areas in the morning. The afternoon will be in play for some areas too. Note, watch the morning high tide.

Sunday the 16th: 3-5+ feet

Good surf continues as size holds through the day. Longer period WNW swell will be dominant, as leftover mid period WNW drops off. The dominant swell period will still drop some though, spreading energy for more breaks across the region. Another morning with favorable conditions is expected, followed by a light onshore breeze. Looking very manageable at this time, with some areas seeing clean surf all day. Again, watch for the morning high tide.

Monday the 17th: 3-4+ feet

The surf will finally be on the downward trend, but easing WNW swell will still show fun waves across the region. Best to wait for the tide drop this day and get on it mid morning with the light wind. The afternoon looks to stay fairly light again, so that is a good call too. Slight chance of showers through the day as that low pressure system inches closer to the region.

Tuesday the 18th: 3-4+ feet

Size levels out due to a new pulse of WNW swell. Nothing too big with this new swell, but it will keep most breaks in the fun zone range all day. The morning will see clean favorable conditions, followed by a light onshore breeze from the west.

Wednesday the 19th: 2-4 feet

WNW swell eases and shows smaller surf compared to what we’ve seen as of late. The morning will be a bit slow with the high tide, but late morning could get kinda fun. The afternoon will see a light onshore breeze from the west.

Thursday the 20th: 2-3 feet

Smallest day of the forecast. Just leftover WNW swell, but if you’re looking for waves there should still be a few peaks to track down. Conditions are looking mostly clean at the moment.

Long Range Forecast

Our good run of WNW swell continues this week, and takes a slight breather towards the end of the forecast. The good news is that there is potential for another long period WNW for next week. Timeframe right now is looking like early to mid week. So we still got some substantial WNW swell in the forecast, but better to get on it this month as the rest of winter continues to look not as favorable compared to what we’ve seen the past few weeks.
