Smaller But Sunny Surf This Weekend in SoCal

4.14.23 – 4.16.23: A temporary lull in swell activity is set for this weekend as the northwest combo swell from this week (April 10th – 14th) begins to die down. Friday should still see some decent sized waves from the remanence of this past system but after that it looks pretty quiet until another round of NW swell moves in on Monday.

The weather should all around be pretty nice at least. Highs make the mid-60s in most locations while Los Angeles hits the mid-70s each day this weekend. Sunny skies are expected along with light to no wind through the weekend.

There won’t be too much happening this weekend but next week actually looks pretty interesting as we will likely get another round of NW swell on Monday and lasting through the week. Coupled with this will be a secondary swell from the Southern Hemisphere which could make for some pretty nice surf weather.

Until Monday, things waves will be pretty small but the weather looks nice. Saturday and Sunday are expected to have 1-2 foot waves from the southwest with variable periods averaging 12 seconds. This should be a nice opportunity for inexperienced surfers to get some practice in. See The 10-Day Forecast

Best Bets

-Friday morning will see the largest waves around 2-3 ft for most areas. Little wind is expected with all around nice weather!

-Friday evening also looks pretty nice although waves will have diminished in size from this morning. Closer to 1-2 ft sized waves from the southwest are anticipated.

-Sunday morning looks calm but waves average just 1 ft across all beaches. Could be a good time for beginners.

FRIDAY MORNING

Saturday morning will start out a little chilly with most locations near 50. With the sun out and along with light winds, it shouldn’t feel that bad. Light and variable winds are expected as a weak surface low sits just offshore. All around the weather and winds are ideal for surfing.

Lingering NW swell from this week will still be in place although waves don’t look too impressive. They will however be the biggest we see through the forecast period. Models show 3-4 ft waves near San Diego while other locations should see 2-3 ft waves with west facing beaches seeing larger waves. Periods average 11 seconds although a high degree of variability is anticipated.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON

The swell from earlier in the week continues to diminish while temperatures warm up into the mid to upper-60s for the afternoon. San Diego will still see the largest waves around 2-3 feet but other west faces will see closer to just 2 feet.

South faces are expected to see just 1 ft waves so it definitely worth traveling if you want to ride larger waves. Winds stay light, a possible onshore breeze could develop but speeds stay under 5 mph. Periods also look pretty nice at around 10-13 seconds.

SATURDAY MORNING

Calm conditions are expected to continue similar to Friday evening except waves decrease even further. Almost no one will have waves larger than 1 foot except for a few isolated locations where between 1 and 2 feet could be possible.

The weather looks nice with temps a few degrees warmer than Friday morning. Lows won’t fall below the low-50s for anyone. Winds look like they should be almost completely calm for all of Southern California.

SATURDAY EVENING

With highs hitting the mid-70s in Los Angeles and upper-60s elsewhere, it looks like we could have beautiful weather for doing anything you want outside which includes surfing. The only thing is that our waves are still going to be pretty small.

With very little energy on the water just 1 ft waves are anticipated across all beach fronts. Winds should stay light though as an onshore breeze develops for the afternoon but speeds stay under 10 mph. Periods average between 11 and 13 seconds except near the border where they will be shorter.

SUNDAY MORNING

Not much changes overnight as Sundays’ waves look pretty similar to that of Saturday. 1 ft heights are anticipated for all beaches making for a pretty slow day but the weather continues to stay nice at least. Lows start out in the mid-50s under sunshine.

Winds look like they could be completely calm for the morning hours but they may pick up in the afternoon as usual. 12 second periods will be in place or most beaches as indicated by models.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Further offshore waves start to increase as the next low moves in but nearshore were still expected to have 1 ft waves in place through the evening. Winds will probably pick up late in the afternoon around 15 mph onshore making for not the best surf conditions.

Highs will reach the mid-70s in Los Angeles similar to Saturday with upper-60s to the north and south. Larger surf is expected to arrive on Monday but through the day on Sunday things look pretty quiet.
