Stormy With a Few Opportunities | Socal Weekly Forecast

Overview

3/4/22 – 3/10/22: A stormy weekend along with a good sized NW swell mix is in route to start off this week’s forecast. Although there shouldn’t be any great windows to score waves, there should be a little bit of opportunity for tucked away breaks during the peak of this swell. This NW swell mix will show the biggest size Friday the 4th and into Saturday the 5th. Waves will quickly drop off Sunday the 6th, but conditions will improve. The surf will continue to ease after that, and will get pretty small by midweek as just minal NW energy shows. Not much Southern Hemisphere swell is expected, but that will soon change by next week.

We have some precipitation in the forecast for SoCal! It’s not going to be a lot, but it will still be more than pretty much anything we have seen in all of 2022. The rain will move in very early Friday morning and linger through the first half of the day. A few scattered showers look to continue on and off through Saturday, especially for areas farther south. Expect about 0.25”-0.50” in total for most coastal areas, with higher localized amounts possible under heavier cells/thunderstorms. Breezy onshore winds are expected for Friday/Saturday, and by Sunday favorable morning conditions look to return. Conditions will remain dry and gradually warm up through the workweek.

Best Bets

– Biggest size will show Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th as good-sized NW swell mix peaks, but breezy onshore winds will ruin conditions.

– Sunday the 6th will be the day to target with leftover NW swell and light morning winds.

– Surf gets pretty small into the workweek, getting close to flat by midweek.

Day to Day Breakdown

Friday the 4th: 4-6+ feet

One of the bigger days in the week as a more localized NW swell mix fills in through the day. Select winter magnets will see waves at least a few feet bigger than listed above. Unfortunately conditions look unfavorable for much of the day. Mid morning may have a brief window of light winds before the west wind really picks up. Scattered rain showers will move through the region.

Saturday the 5th: 3-5+ feet

More of the mid period component of the NW swell mix drops off, but new NW windswell will pulse up more and will help size from not dropping too much. Morning winds will be lightest, but it will still be pretty jumbled. A stronger west wind is expected to pick up for the rest of the day.

Sunday the 6th: 2-4 feet

Expect the surf to drop off pretty rapidly through the day as NW windswell loses steam. The morning window is the call as most size shows and winds are looking mostly clean. A cold morning is in store due to the storm just exiting the region. A lighter afternoon onshore breeze will follow.

Monday the 7th: 1-3 feet

The easing trend continues. Only small NW windswell leftover from the weekend. There may be just enough energy in the water to get a few waves, but it will most likely be pretty weak. Clean morning conditions are expected with light offshore flow, followed by a more moderate onshore breeze from the west in the afternoon.

Tuesday the 8th: 1-2 feet

Pretty close to being flat. Not much swell in the water, maybe just a tad of NW windswell. Another morning of light offshore wind is expected, possibly a tad stronger. The morning will be followed by a typical afternoon seabreeze.

Wednesday the 9th: 1-2 feet

A repeat of Tuesday in terms of wave heights. Another day of very small, minimal surf. A light south wind could get on it, but overall winds look to stay relatively light.

Thursday the 10th: 1-2 feet

The forecast will end on a small note as this short term flat spell continues. Again, just minimal energy from the NW is expected, with maybe a few rideable waves here and there on a bigger board.

Long Range Forecast

March is already here, which means the North Pacific typically begins to slow down, and the South Pacific gradually wakes up. The models are indicating that this will mostly happen in the coming weeks as we head deeper into March. We should still see more of these localized NW windswells from time to time though, just less of a chance of seeing any substantial WNW groundswell. Some good news though is that confidence is increasing that we should see some small to medium sized south swell from the South Pacific in the coming weeks.
