A Few Waves After a Windy Monday In SoCal

4.3.23 – 4.6.23: Northwest ground and wind swell on tap for Monday will bring in some larger sized waves lasting through Tuesday afternoon. Waves with this systems won’t be huge, Tuesday morning will likely see the largest waves peaking around 4 ft near the border with everyone else experiencing 2-3 ft. This swell backs off through the day on Tuesday as the low bringing it moves further east.

The rest of the week is looking quiet with 1 ft waves Wednesday and Thursday. Next week we may see a return of some Southern Hemi swell but until then the NW combo swell will produce the largest sized waves for a while.

Strong winds on Monday will ruin the surf day but Tuesday should be much calmer providing for a better surf opportunity. Winds for the rest of the week should remain calm to variable with speeds staying under 10 mph max.

The NW will bring in some cooler air to start the week off. Monday’s highs will be noticeably cooler than over the weekend with afternoon temps reaching between 60 and 62 degrees. We may even see a brief shower or two on Monday but the rest of the week looks dry as temps begin to slowly warm up by a few degrees each day. See The 10-Day Forecast

Best Bets

  • Tuesday morning should be the best time to surf as waves peak in size and winds finally die down. 3-4 ft sized waves expected near the border.
  • Tuesday afternoon also looks nice although waves begin to diminish in size.
  • Wednesday and Thursday should be nice for beginners as there won’t be much wind and waves stay small but organized.

MONDAY

By the time the sun comes up the winds will already be pretty strong across the shore with 15 mph on average. Close to 40 mph offshore speeds will approach the coast through the day increasing nearshore winds through the afternoon. By 2 P.M. almost everyone will be experiencing at least 20 mph winds coming onshore making for poor surf weather.

On top of the winds, there’s also a slight chance for rain and temps will be on the cooler side with highs near 60. The winds will create some larger waves compared to this weekend with 3-4 ft heights possible near San Diego. Other west facing beaches will see 2-3 ft sized waves most of which will be from the winds swell.

TUESDAY

Tuesday morning is when we expect to see the largest waves of this forecast period. Waves won’t be huge by any means but, 3-4 ft waves are possible near the border with 2-3 ft waves elsewhere; similar to yesterday but maybe a few inches larger. This is also perfect timing because the winds should begin to die down around Tuesday morning.

Winds will start off as offshore with speeds under 10 mph for the morning. Models are showing that winds stay fairly calm through most of the afternoon but then transition into an onshore breeze late in the evening with speeds around 10-12 mph. Highs should reach the low to mid-60s under sunshine making for the best surf day this week. Periods will gradually increase through the day with a 10 second average.

WEDNESDAY

From this point onwards the weather and surf appear to be pretty calm. The northwest swell really backs off Tuesday night with just 1-2 ft waves anticipated for Wednesday making for a slow day but possibly good for beginners.

Winds should stay calm all day long with an onshore breeze possible after the sun goes down. The overall weather also looks pretty nice with highs in the mid-60s under sunny skies and no rain being in the forecast. Periods should stay between 13 and 16 seconds.

THURSDAY

Thursday will mostly be a continuation of Wednesday with what’s left of the northwest swell dissipating even further. Closer to just 1 ft waves are expected by Thursday morning with 2 ft waves possible towards the south near San Diego. Waves continue to decrease in size through the day.

The warmest day of the forecast period will occur on Thursday with highs in the upper-60s and low-70s. All around beautiful atmospheric conditions are in the forecast for Thursday with light winds and sunny skies. It’s too bad waves won’t be large but at least this will provide a good chance for first time surfers to go out. See The 10-Day Forecast
