Heatwave and a Few Waves – Socal Weekly Forecast

Overview

Summertime like conditions are going to be in full swing all week. A major heatwave is on the way, local water temperatures are slowly inching up, and some fun surf is expected. The swells delivering the surf this week will be a small to medium sized run of southern hemi as well as a bit of NW windswell in the mix. Then we’ll see a larger run of south build in towards the end of the forecast. Overall, there should be a few peaky days of fun surf with warm conditions.

The coasts will be mostly spared from the heat compared to the inland areas, but they will still see the warmest temperatures so far this year, ranging from the mid 70s to low 80s. Our local water temperatures will be able to inch up too, thanks to the warm outside temperatures, and mostly light onshore winds in the afternoons. Even with the heatwave, the winds don’t look ideal most mornings, but they will still be light enough to get a surf in. A few afternoons don’t look bad either, so keep an eye on that too.

Best Bets

-Enjoy the warm conditions during the week along with the peaky mix of swells.

-Target the end of the forecast for larger surf.

Daily Breakdown (June 15th – 21st)

Tuesday the 15th: 2-3+ feet

Nice little peaky mix of small south swell and fresh NW windswell. The low tide in the morning will drain things out, but by mid to late morning the tide push will help the cause. Winds will be light and variable to slightly onshore before a light west wind kicks in during the afternoon. We’ll also see some moisture move into the region from the southeast in the form of high clouds.

Wednesday the 16th: 2-4 feet

Similar to Tuesday, but just a tad bigger. Small south swell nudges up a bit more along with NW windswell. Should be fairly peaky, but weather models have been in a good agreement with a light south wind across the region first thing in the morning. The winds could slightly ease later in the day, so keep an eye out for a possible afternoon window.

Thursday the 17th: 2-4 feet

The peaky mix of south swell and NW windswell continues. The morning winds look to cooperate, but again the low tide will drain things out for most spots. The good news is that the winds will be pretty light all day along with warm conditions, so waiting for an afternoon surf isn’t a bad call.

Friday the 18th: 2-3 feet

Surf drops off a notch as some small south swell still shows along with minimal NW windswell mixing in. Even though there won’t be a whole lot of surf, it should still be a fun day to get in the water with light winds and warm outside temperatures.

Saturday the 19th: 2-3 feet

Surf bottoms out at 2-3 feet for top breaks as some south swell lingers. With mostly favorable winds and warm conditions, it will still be worth a surf for some southerly focal points.

Sunday the 20th: 3-4+ feet (largest late)

The larger run of southern hemi will gradually fill in through the day, showing best size late. There won’t be much NW swell in the water, so things will be very walled for the beach breaks. The weather will still be nice to get down to the beach, so it will be a great day for Father’s Day and to kick off the first day of summer.

Monday the 21st: 3-5 feet

Healthy run of south swell tops out and holds solid all day. Still not much NW swell in the water, so find a structure or point that can handle the dominant southerly energy. If the winds cooperate, it will be a really fun day of surf for the southerly focal points.
