Happy Fourth! Another Fun Week of Surf | Socal Weekly Forecast

Another fun week of surf is on the way, including a medium sized run of south swell for the 4th of July weekend!

Overview

There will be overlapping southern hemisphere swells this workweek, along with a touch of NW windswell. The medium sized run of south swell will start showing towards the beginning of 4th of July weekend, showing best size on the 4th into the 5th before easing.

SoCal is in for some unique weather for the middle of this week. A surge of monsoonal moisture is expected to move into the region Tuesday to Thursday, bringing a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms to the inland areas, but mostly just higher level clouds for the coastal region. A stray shower or thunderstorm moving towards the coast from the northeast can increase the local winds, but the chances of this happening are low. A Catalina eddy is also expected to spin up during the the beginning of the forecast, bringing along marine layer and south wind. Later in the week the marine layer will become less widespread, and morning winds will become more favorable.

Best Bets

– Cleanest mornings will be Thursday/Friday/Saturday, but there’s also smaller surf.

– 4th of July weekend will see a medium sized run of south swell with semi clean conditions.

– Keep an eye out on the surge of monsoonal moisture midweek for some unique SoCal weather.

Day to day breakdown (June 29th – July 5th)

Tuesday the 29th: 2-4 feet

Dominant southern hemi and minor NW windswell will be in the water showing peaky surf for many breaks. The morning low tide and light south winds early will make it a hard morning to find fun surf.

Wednesday the 30th: 2-4 feet

Another day of semi-peaky surf as south swell hangs in there and NW swell mostly drops off. The morning winds look lighter than Tuesday, but likely still some minor texture on it along with a drained morning tide. Afternoon winds don’t look too bad, so keep an eye on that if the morning doesn’t work out.

Thursday the 1st: 2-3 feet

Surf drops off a notch as just small south swell remains and very little NW energy. Morning winds will be pretty clean, just watch out for the low tide again. A light westerly sea breeze will pick up through the afternoon.

Friday the 2nd: 2-3 feet

Surf bottoms out before forerunners of the 4th of July weekend run of swell start to show, initially building in with a lot of west in it. The forerunners won’t add much more size, but possibly a few bigger sets late in the day. Winds will be similar to Thursday with clean morning conditions, as well as a light westerly sea breeze in the afternoon.

Saturday the 3rd: 3-4 feet

The run of southern hemi shows more size than Friday, but still has a lot of west in it. The more southerly component of the run will show later in the day, and could show larger sets late. Morning winds will be fairly light, and a light westerly sea breeze will pick up in the afternoon.

Sunday the 4th: 3-5 feet

South swell will top out for the 4th, but there may be a light south wind on it in the morning. The swell will hold solid all day, and the afternoon wind will be less than 10 knots for most spots across the region, so it could still be a fun day to get in the water for the 4th.

Monday the 5th: 3-5 feet

The 4th of July swell will still be showing decent energy through the day for the southerly focal points, but weather models have been trending towards a morning of south wind with textured conditions. Could still be a fun day of surf, and the models could always trend back lighter with the morning winds as things are still a week out.
