Not as Big, But Still Some Surf | Socal Weekly Forecast | 7.20.21 – 7.26.21

After another solid week of swell from the South Pacific, this week’s forecast slows down a bit, but still maintaining fun surf for the majority of breaks across SoCal.

Overview

Although not as big as the last few weeks, we will see surf from multiple sources including some localized NW windswell, some fun size southern hemi, and just a hint of tropical swell from former TS Guillermo. This mix of swells will result in some peaky days of surf during the workweek. Then during the weekend things will become more lined up as a slightly bigger southern hemi fills in.

It has certainly felt like summer this past week, and it will continue to feel that way as we head deeper into July. Most mornings have been clear as of late, thanks to the warmer sea surface temperatures just off the coast of SoCal (low 70s), and the more humid air mass aloft due to some monsoonal flow. We’ll see the upper atmosphere dry out, and a weak Catalina Eddy spin up midweek, which means we’ll transition back to some cloudy mornings followed by afternoon clearings. Later in the week we could see another surge of monsoonal moisture possibly bringing more humid conditions and less marine layer in the mornings, but storm activity will remain inland, and does not look as significant as this past weekend’s moisture surge. With this pattern we will see mostly clean conditions every morning, followed by a typical light afternoon seabreeze from the west. Local water temperatures will continue to hover around that 70 degree mark.

Best Bets

-Target the combo breaks midweek as mix of swells align with light winds.

-Target the southerly focal points over the weekend as things get more lined up.

-Keep a heads up on the major tide fluctuations throughout the week. Drained out tides early mornings, deep high tides around sunset.

Day to Day Breakdown

Tuesday the 20th: 2-3+ feet

Small day of surf from minor southern hemi and steep SSE tropical swell from former TS Guillermo showing late in the day. The tropical swell won’t add any additional size on top of the southern hemi, but it may add some consistency for the southerly focal points. Winds will be calm with glassy conditions in the morning until a west wind picks up in the afternoon.

Wednesday the 21st: 2-4 feet

Slightly more size than Tuesday. Continued southern hemi along with minor pulse of tropical swell. NW windswell also pulses up slightly, so the mix of swells should be fairly peaky at some of the combo breaks. The morning will have a very light south wind on it due to the weak Catalina Eddy spinning up. Afternoon winds don’t look too strong so an evening session could be worth a look.

Thursday the 22nd: 2-3+ feet

The mix of swells begins to ease. The surf should still be pretty peaky and big enough to track down a corner, as NW windswell continues to hang in there. Morning winds and weather look similar to Wednesday, with a light south wind on it for some parts of the region. Afternoon winds again don’t look too bad.

Friday the 23rd: 2-3 feet

The mix of swells bottoms out, smallest day of surf in the forecast. Even though the surf is pretty small, there could still be a few corners during the morning tide push. Morning winds are looking light, followed by a typical light afternoon seabreeze.

Saturday the 24th: 2-4 feet

We will begin to see a new southern hemi fill in through the day, showing best size late. Not much NW windswell left, so things will be pretty lined up. Morning winds look light right now, with the slight possibility of some south wind on it.

Sunday the 25th: 3-4+ feet

Southern hemi continues to fill in and eventually tops out. Southerly focal points with a structure will be best as not much swell will be crossing it up. Possible south wind in the morning, but too early for specifics.

Monday the 26th: 2-4 feet

Southern hemi holds to slightly eases. Those summer breaks will still be showing fun waves, so another good day of surf is on the way if the winds cooperate.
