Small to Medium Surf | Socal Weekly Forecast | 7.27.21 – 8.2.21

Overview

Another week of small to medium sized surf to end July and kick off August. The only source of swells this week will be from the South Pacific, even though there hasn’t been as much action there compared to the beginning of July. There will still be enough activity to send a few fun sized rounds of south swell to SoCal. Things will be pretty lined up all week as little to no NW windswell mixes in.

After a very rare July rain on Monday morning the 26th, this week’s weather will be fairly seasonal with marine layer clouds most mornings followed by afternoon clearings. The afternoons will be sunny, but stronger west winds look to pick up each afternoon, which will be enough to cause some upwelling and resulting in colder local water temperatures.

After a nice run of water temperatures in the 70s, most parts of SoCal could drop down into the mid to low 60s by the end of the workweek. Morning conditions aren’t going to be ideal during the workweek either, with light westerly winds forecasted early. Those morning winds will still be a lot lighter than the afternoons, so if you’re looking for a surf, the earlier the better. Winds may improve some by the weekend, but they’re still not looking ideal.

Best Bets

-Get on it early during the workweek before west winds really blow things out in the afternoon.

-Wait until the back half of the forecast for more favorable winds.

-Keep an eye out for dropping water temperatures.

Day to Day Conditions

Tuesday the 27th: 2-4 feet

One of the bigger days in the forecast. The primary swell in the water will be the southern hemi that peaked on Sunday the 25th into Monday the 26th. Wave heights will slightly ease through the day. Morning winds will be light from the west under 5 knots, until a stronger westerly sea breeze picks up in the afternoon.

Wednesday the 28th: 2-3+ feet

Mix of small southern hemisphere swells. Not looking like a great day to surf, as the morning starts out drained along with light west wind already on it. Afternoon onshores could get over 10 knots from the west.

Thursday the 29th: 2-3 feet

Leftover small south swells still showing some rideable waves for top south facing breaks. Slightly textured in the morning, but not looking as bad as Wednesday. Low tide and small surf will make it hard to find fun waves. Another afternoon of west winds nearing 10 knots.

Friday the 30th: 2-3 feet

Same size to slightly smaller than Thursday. Still some south swell rolling through, but not much power out there. Morning winds could be lightly onshore, but it’s looking lighter than earlier in the week.

Saturday the 31st: 1-3 feet

Getting pretty small out there. Minimal south swell rolling through. Morning winds may finally cooperate with calm conditions, so bringing out a longboard wouldn’t be a bad call.

Sunday the 1st: 2-3+ feet (larger sets possible late)

We’ll start out the month of August with a new building swell. A fresh southern hemi will slowly fill in through the day, showing largest size late. Morning winds may cooperate again, but things are too far out for details.

Monday the 2nd: 3-5+ feet

Fresh southern hemi continues to fill in, showing fun sized surf across the region for the southerly focal points. Too early for wind/weather specifics, but if they cooperate, Monday will be a good day to target.
