Socal Weekly Forecast | 9.16 – 9.22

Back to a more typical week of surf as our locally solid run of Southern Hemisphere swell eases.

Overview

The leftovers of this run of swell will show best size Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, with some fun waves lingering into the weekend. After that swell bottoms out, there’s not a whole lot to look forward to for the rest of the week and into the longer range.

That being said, the South Pacific isn’t going to completely shut off, so things aren’t going to get completely flat through the start of the upcoming work week. The North Pacific is slowly starting to show signs of life, but no NW groundswell is expected for SoCal, as most of the activity remains pretty far north of us. We will see a minor NW windswell around Monday September 20th, but that swell on its own isn’t going to do much for most spots.

Slightly cooler than average temperatures through the weekend, as an early-season trough moves into far Northern California. No rain forecasted for SoCal, but we’ll see more fall-like temps during the weekend before a warm-up expected at the start of the upcoming work week. We’ll continue to see light morning winds and calm conditions most days. Monday could be an exception, with the possibility of some south wind on it first thing in the morning. Afternoons will consist of moderate onshore sea breezes, with no major west wind upwelling days in sight. End result, we’ll continue to see water temps running in the low-to-mid 60s for most of the region.

Best Bets

– Target the first 2 days of the forecast for the biggest and best surf

– Still a few fun leftovers lingering into the weekend

Day to Day Breakdown

Thursday the 16th: 4-6 feet (largest early)

Largest day in the forecast. Our locally solid Southern Hemi from last week’s forecast is on the downward trend. Summer breaks will still see some pretty good surf, especially in the morning. Morning winds look favorable, but best to get on things sooner than later before a moderate west wind picks up for the rest of the day.

Friday the 17th: 3-4+ feet (largest early)

South swell continues to ease. Size is down a notch or two from Thursday, but many breaks will still see fun surf. Morning winds look favorable again, and afternoon winds look better than Thursday. With still some leftover surf in the water and lighter winds all day, try to get a surf in before the swell wraps up and things get slower.

Saturday the 18th: 2-4 feet

South swell lingers into the weekend. Summer breaks are showing the best size still. Morning winds look light, but not quite as light as Thursday/Friday with wind already coming out of the west. Afternoon onshores pick up a bit more than the previous days, so get on it sooner than later if looking for a weekend surf.

Sunday the 19th: 2-3+ feet

South swell bottoms out, but shows rideable waves for summer spots across the region. Lighter morning winds are expected, followed by a typical afternoon seabreeze. The morning will be the best window, but some spots may have trouble with the high tide and lack of swell.

Monday the 20th: 2-3 feet

South swell continues to show rideable waves, along with a small new NW windswell. Which could be a fun peaky day of surf, it looks like most spots across the region will be dealing with some texture from south wind. Afternoon winds may ease.

Tuesday the 21st: 2-3 feet

Just a minor mix of leftover south swell and NW windswell. Morning winds look to trend more favorable, but there won’t be much surf running with it.

Wednesday the 22nd: 2-3 feet

Similar to Tuesday. We may see a small new south swell show later in the day, but it won’t be much. Local winds are looking pretty light as of now.
