Yep… Rain In The Forecast Again, But Combo Swell In The Mix – SoCal

The week will start off pretty quiet with light northwest combo swell from this weekend spilling over into Monday and Tuesday. Monday will see larger waves than Tuesday but by no means would I say these waves are big. 1-2 ft waves are expected for Monday with just 1 ft waves on Tuesday. Winds should stay on lighter side before Wednesday and rain will hold off so the waters will at least be surfable.

Some more interesting weather is set to arrive on Wednesday. A trough will make its way into the area by Wednesday bringing a good amount of ground swell to SoCal. Unfortunately, the ground swell will be accompanied by rain which looks very likely Wednesday and Thursday. Winds won’t be too bad so if we end up seeing the rain clear out faster than expected we could have a pretty nice surf day on Thursday.

The northwest ground swell should peak Wednesday evening with 5-6 ft waves near San Diego and closer to 4 ft waves for other west facing beaches. From Wednesday night onwards, we’ll see waves begin to decrease in size but still remain decently large for Thursday.

Southern Hemisphere ground swell looks like it may begin to enter the region this next weekend, possibly as early as Thursday. The primary swell for Thursday will still be the northwest ground swell with waves averaging 2-4 ft.

Best Bets

  • Given that the rain lets up, Thursday evening looks very nice with light winds, decently large ground swell and hopefully sunnier conditions.
  • Thursday morning will have larger waves than the afternoon but it looks like it could be rainy. If the rain decides to let up, which is possible, this could be an excellent time to surf.
  • Monday and Tuesday will be dry and have light winds but waves will stay fairly small.

MONDAY

Left over ground swell from the weekend will be in place for Monday morning with 1-2 ft waves coming in from the northwest. 3 ft waves may be possible closer to the Mexican border. Calm to possibly a light offshore wind is anticipated for Monday with period lengths ranging from 10 to 13 seconds. All around the morning looks pretty nice.

Highs for the afternoon will reach close to 70 for both LA and San Diego with sunny skies. All around beautiful early spring weather. Waves continue to diminish in size for the afternoon with periods staying consistent through the day. 1 ft waves are expected across all beaches by Monday evening.

TUESDAY

Not much will change between Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Widespread 1 ft waves look likely across all beaches so their won’t be much energy out on the water. Waves will stay small throughout the afternoon but we may see them pick up a little late in the evening as the next round of ground swell moves in.

Winds will stay light basically all day until later in the evening closer to sundown. Speeds will stay under 5 mph through the afternoon but we’ll an increase to 10 mph around 6 P.M. from the west. The rain is expected to hold off for most of the area except for places north of Ventura County where rain could begin in the evening hours. Highs will top out in the mid-60s.

WEDNESDAY

Rain will make its way through the area from north to south during the day on Wednesday. For this reason, it will likely end up being a poor surf day. However, we could see a few breaks in the rain especially to the north during the evening hours which may allow for a brief surf opportunity. San Diego may be dry through the morning as well.

Northwest ground swell will move in and peak during the evening hours. 4 ft + waves are expected all day for all west facing beaches with San Diego seeing closer to 5-6 ft waves. Winds may be a bit problematic at times as the center of the low approaches the coastline. Speeds could be as high as 15 mph but there may also be areas with calm conditions.

THURSDAY

A secondary round of rain is likely for the morning hours but by the afternoon we should be dry except for maybe down near San Diego. A good amount of northwest ground swell will still be in place with 3-4 ft waves expected along west facing beaches for the morning. We will gradually see the NW swell diminish through the afternoon with some weak Southern Hemisphere swell possibly mixing in.

Winds should stay light to variable through the entire day making for nice surfing weather given the rain ends. It will be cooler, with highs closer to 60 degrees with some places staying in the 50s where it continues to rain. All around Thursday could end up being very nice if the rain decides to end.
